Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was employed as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to perform tasks like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She only attended school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose was filled with challenges. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to secure work for stage. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at a night club before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. In Boston, where she worked during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. Also, she studied drama. She ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
